Jeep burned up the day after repair

I was called to testify in a case in which a Jeep caught fire one day after it was repaired. The repair required removal and replacement of the carburetor and intake manifold, which included the fuel supply and return lines. The entire vehicle was consumed by the fire, but it was clear from inspection that the fire originated in the engine compartment. Although the rubber fuel hoses were turned to ash, each of the hose clamps except one was in its proper place, and tightened to the proper diameter around a ring of burnt rubber. I found the one missing hose clamp in a pile of ash under the fuel pump. Its diameter clearly indicated that it had not been tightened. This evidence was presented at trial, where the plaintiff was awarded damages from the repair facility.
